Company Overview

Highlights

EdgeComputing service named “Business Software Product of the Year” by the IT trade magazine Computing in 2004.

“Akamai” is Hawaiian for “intelligent,” “clever,” or “cool.”

Akamai is in the business of extending a company’s online infrastructure by providing products and services that primarily focus on supporting the delivery of dynamic, media-rich content. Specializing in streaming media and applications, Akamai aims to improve website speed, quality, and reliability while preventing server overloads and crashes. Akamai launched its commercial service in April 1999, immediately signing the Internet giant Yahoo as one of its charter customers. The company’s flagship service, EdgePlatform, routes desired content through the fastest and geographically closest servers in Akamai’s network. This system allows client companies to continue to serve Internet data quickly and reliably even when bandwidth is choked near the company’s actual servers. Akamai prides itself on managing nearly 15 percent of all the traffic on the Internet this way. With more than a dozen offices in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, Akamai lays claim to more than 18,000 servers in more than 1,000 networks in almost 70 countries. Clients include Charles Schwab, FedEx, General Motors, Monster.com, MTV, Sony Ericsson, Target, and Xerox.
