Allstate is the second-largest personal-lines insurance company in the United States. The Northbrook, Illinois–based company offers home, auto, life, business, and property insurance to more than 17 million households. The bulk of Allstate's business comes from home and auto insurance. The company started out in 1931 selling insurance out of Sears department stores. In the 1950s, it added home and life insurance to its already booming auto business. In 2005 Allstate paid $21.2 billion in total property liability insurance claims and claims expense.
