Ameren zaps Illinois and Missouri with enough electricity to meet the needs of 2.3 million consumers; it also serves 900,000 with natural gas. A primary energy source is the Callaway nuclear power plant near Fulton, Missouri. Ameren resulted from a 1997 merger between Union Electric Company and CIPSCO Incorporated. Subsidiaries include AmerenEnergy, which deals with large customers. Another, Ameren Services, provides billing and metering products for utilities. Ameren completed its acquisition of the Central Illinois Light Company in 2003 for $1.4 billion, forming a new subsidiary, AmerenCILCO, to provide electricity to customers in Illinois. The following year, it bought Illinois Power Company for $2.3 billion to form the subsidiary AmerenIP.
