BDO Seidman is the sixth-largest accounting firm in the United States, coming in behind Grant Thornton near the top of the second tier of accounting firms.

Its most important practice is its assurance practice, which audits client companies. The assurance practice includes a new risk consulting and advisory practice, which helps clients navigate the rapidly changing financial regulatory business risk environments. BDO Seidman also does business in tax and financial advisory, and it has a consulting practice that helps clients choose and implement IT solutions. It also employs people in business development. Executive recruiting and other services are offered via the firm’s parent, BDO International, which is one of the largest accounting firms in the world.

BDO Seidman focuses on midsize clients and operates out of 34 U.S. offices. It also has alliances with independent accounting firms in more than 300 offices nationwide through a program called the BDO Seidman Alliance. The parent company, which opened shop in 1963 and is headquartered in Belgium, has more than 600 offices in 100 countries around the world.

After struggling like most other accounting firms in the earlier part of the decade due to decreasing demand for tax consulting services and bad PR relating to IRS legal struggles, BDO Seidman showed a revenue jump in 2005 when it began acquiring new SEC audit clients. By September 2006 the firm announced its second consecutive year of double-digit growth. BDO Seidman attributes its recent growth to consistent performance across its entire network and an increasing willingness of blue chip clients to explore alternatives to the Big Four.

The firm is always on the lookout for talented, experienced candidates, and it hires students into assurance associate, tax associate, and intern positions. Contact the office you want to work in for more information; recruiting can differ from office to office.
