Bloomberg

Company Overview

Highlights

Founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Hires candidates in analytics, R&D, global data, and global customer support; extensive training is offered through the Bloomberg University.

At some point in the mid-’70s, Michael Bloomberg left Salomon Brothers, vowing never to return to investment banking. The world of finance must have been in his blood, though, because he chose to create a top-notch financial news and information services company instead. Bloomberg publishes magazines and books, has a syndicated news service, and broadcasts financial information via TV, radio, and the Web. But the company’s core business is its Bloomberg Professional Service, which integrates financial data, news, analytics, multimedia reports, and email onto a single platform so that market professionals the world over can stay on top of their game. Over 260,000 people in 125 countries subscribe to the service, offered on either a PC or specialized terminals. The strength of Bloomberg's news reporting services wooed top writers away from competitors like The Wall Street Journal and Forbes. Today, Bloomberg provides real-time news, market data, analyses, and even sports information in 100 countries via magazines, television, radio, and news wire services. In addition, Bloomberg provides electronic trading access for financial markets, including NASDAQ. Although Michael Bloomberg is now mayor of New York City and no longer manages the company, he still retains 72 percent ownership. Merrill Lynch also has a stake.
