Company Overview
Winters on Michigan's lower peninsula would be a whole lot colder without CMS Energy. This energy holding company's regulated utility subsidiary, Consumers Energy, founded in the 1880s, now supplies electricity to 1.7 million customers and natural gas to 1.6 million. CMS Energy also builds, owns, and operates power plants and transmission lines. It has interests in power-generating facilities, gas pipelines, and utilities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East as well. The company has also been busy acquiring natural gas pipelines and now lays claim to 15,460 miles’ worth.
