Formed in 1982 by the merger of INA Corporation and Connecticut General Corporation, Cigna provides health insurance and financial services in the U.S., Asia, Europe, and the Pacific Rim. It is one of the largest HMO providers in the United States. Cigna's businesses are broken into five key areas. Employee health care, life, and disability benefits offers company HMO plans, POS plans, and dental plans . Employee retirement benefits and investment services offers pension plans, profit sharing plans, retirement savings plans, and corporate life insurance. International life, health, and employee benefits provides products and services in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Run-off reinsurance operations administers the company’s remaining reinsurance businesses. The company stopped writing reinsurance in 2000.
