Comverse Technology, Inc. is a leading provider of the software and systems that make network-based communications services possible. Besides its namesake Comverse unit, the company has four other companies: Verint Systems provides business security and intelligence systems; Ulticom provides wireless systems software; Startel offers voice, data, and networking products for call center facilities; and Starhome, which offers mobile roaming technology and services. The company has been through some tough times in recent years. In response, it’s cut costs by restructuring and layoffs, and generated cash via the sales of parts of its subsidiaries. It’s also made some acquisitions. In 2005 it purchased the software-based billing services unit of CSG Systems, and in 2006 added Netcentrex, an IP networking application developer, and Netonomy, strengthening its capacity.
