SG Cowen Securities was created in 1998 when Cowen and Company, a New York firm with an 80-year history, was acquired by the Société Générale Group, a very large, very French bank. Cowen and Company merged with Société Générale’s SG Securities Corporation, giving it a stronger worldwide presence, increased capital, and a new hybrid name. In 2006, Société Générale spun off Cowen Group, Cowen & Co.’s new parent company. The company provides securities and investment banking services focused primarily in the technology, health care, telecommunications, and media and entertainment industries. Its investment banking services include equity and debt financings, private placements, mergers and acquisitions advisory services such as strategic alliances and joint ventures, R&D partnerships, and restricted security sales.
