In the 1960s, engineers at California Cedar Products developed a way to create artificial logs by combining wax with waste from pencil manufacturing. The family that owned California Cedar Products founded Duraflame to manufacture and market the new product. (The Berolzheimer family still owns the company today.) Duraflame is now the U.S.’s number one seller of artificial logs. The company has kept abreast of changing technology. In early 2000 Duraflame announced it was expanding its use of Weathernomics (made by Planalytics), an Internet-based system that helps the company predict weather patterns and the impact on log sales.
