Entergy is engaged in electric power generation, retail distribution, energy marketing and trading, and gas transportation. It operates through subsidiaries: Entergy Arkansas, Entergy Texas, Entergy Louisiana, Entergy Mississippi, and Entergy New Orleans. The company is also engaged in nuclear energy production (it operates nine nuclear power plants, four of them outside its utility service areas) and wholesale sales. The company's current strategy reflects a strong commitment to its nuclear power. Entergy has been expanding its operations in this area, adding four nuclear power plants since 2000. It overcame a major challenge when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita knocked out power for some 1.8 million customers in 2005, but Entergy New Orleans was forced to declare bankruptcy as a result.
