FPL is a utility holding company. Its Florida Power & Light Company subsidiary is a regulated electric utility that serves some 4.3 million customers in Florida. The company's FPL Energy subsidiary develops and operates non-regulated electricity-generating facilities in wholesale markets. It’s currently building five gas-fired power plants, and is a major investor in wind-generated power production. FPL FiberNet leases wholesale fiber-optic network capacity and dark fiber; it operates Florida’s largest fiber-optic network.
