Foundry Networks pulled engineers from such companies as Bay Networks, Cisco, 3Com, Cirrus Logic, Frog Design, Network Peripherals, Network Equipment Technologies, and Novell and put them to work developing Internet traffic management switching and routing solutions—software and switches for Web transactions. Company founder Jeff Prince, who leads the development team, holds seven patents in switching technology. Foundry markets its products primarily to vertical industries such as Internet service providers, entertainment, publishing, finance, aerospace, manufacturing, insurance, engineering, large universities, utilities, and government organizations. The company boasts a worldwide customer base of 9,700, including such companies as Earthlink, Incyte, LucasFilm, Deutsche Bank, and NASA.
