In 1961, two Kentucky lawyers and four friends each invested $1,000 in a nursing home. That investment laid the groundwork for Humana, now a Fortune 500 company that provides managed care to more than 11 million medical members. The company operates HMOs and PPOs, serves Medicaid and Medicare patients, and has a contract with the Department of Defense to provide medical care to members of the military. It also provides dental and life insurance.
The company has invested heavily in the Internet and is a leader in providing e-solutions to its members and affiliated health care providers. Its Web efforts have earned it various industry citations.
