Company Overview
Highlights
Imation provides storage and media consulting for businesses.
58 percent of the company's sales come from outside the U.S.
Imation was born out of 3M's data storage and imaging business in 1996, and it had a troubled childhood. Primarily a maker of data-storage tapes and diskettes at the time, the company at first grappled with declining demand for its products. To stabilize itself, the company slashed jobs for several years, and sold off noncore businesses. Imation’s primary market is removable magnetic and optical technology media, including both the recently introduced Blu-Ray and HD DVD recordable discs. The company also has been making color and image management systems and providing related consulting services. Imation acquired fellow removable media manufacturer Memorex in 2006.
