Level 3 Communications was born out of the 1998 split of Kiewit, a construction company with diversified interests. The company and its subsidiaries are engaged in communications and information services. As its website puts it, it “operates one of the largest communications and Internet backbones in the world.” It leverages that network to offer Internet Protocol (IP) services, broadband transport, colocation services, the patented Softswitch-based managed modem, and voice services. It also offers enterprise software management, technical support, and customer relationship management solutions.
