Company Overview
Filmmaker George Lucas founded Lucasfilm, Ltd. in 1971 in Marin County, California, far away from the Hollywood machine. His first big hit, American Graffiti, made him a millionaire before he turned 30. Star Wars brought even greater success, of course, and with it the formation of two additional companies, Industrial Light and Magic and Sprocket Systems (now SkyWalker Sound), which created the special effects for the film. Today, Lucasfilm continues to produce hits—Star Wars: Attack of the Clones in 2002 and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith in 2005, for instance. It’s also responsible for all management aspects of the other Lucas companies, including Lucas Licensing Ltd., Lucas Digital Ltd., LucasArts, and Lucas Learning. In 2005 Lucasfilm moved much of its operations to facilities in San Francisco's Presidio, previously an army base located at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge.
