Company Overview
Highlights
Collectively, Mayo's three locations treat more than half a million people each year.
Mayo also provides medical education through the Mayo Medical School, Mayo Graduate School, Mayo School of Continuing Medical Education, and the Mayo School of Health Sciences.
Mayo Clinic has been named one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" by Fortune magazine since 2004.
The Mayo Clinic evolved from the frontier practice of Dr. William Worrall Mayo and his two sons, William James Mayo and Charles Horace Mayo. In the mid-1800s, the Minnesota doctors envisioned a new way of practicing medicine through research, clinical teamwork, and education. Today, Mayo has grown into a network of three clinics and four hospitals in Minnesota, Arizona, and Florida, and a network of clinics and hospitals in 62 communities in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Now, as always, the organization focuses on providing the best care possible for its patients. The foundation also provides medical education at the Mayo Medical School, Mayo Graduate School, Mayo School of Continuing Medical Education, and Mayo School of Health Sciences. Mayo Clinic treats more than 500,000 patients a year.
Mayo Clinic’s net operating income is reinvested to advance the science of medicine and to teach the next generation of health care professionals. However, Mayo can’t rely on excess funds from operations alone to completely fund education and research. Benefactor gifts as well as government, foundation and industry sources contribute to Mayo's research and education endeavours.
Mayo will continue to partner with foundations, benefactors, government and industry with mutual aims to support education programs that train the next generation of medical professionals and research programs that identify tomorrow’s medical breakthroughs.
In 2008 and 2009, President Barack Obama has brought the Mayo Clinic’s model of healthcare to the forefront of his healthcare reform efforts. Obama frequently sites the Mayo Clinic as an example of quality, cost-effective healthcare. Some of Mayo’s exemplary practices are salaried doctors (pay isn’t based on the number of procedures performed), accessible electronic records, and integrated coordinate care that promotes a team procedure on all medical cases. Because of this, Mayo Clinic doctors and executives have had the unique opportunity to voice their opinions and suggestions for the new healthcare plan.
