McClatchy

Company Overview

Highlights

Second-largest newspaper company in the U.S. Key properties include the Sacramento Bee, the Miami Herald, the Kansas City Star, the Charlotte Observer, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Raleigh News & Observer, and the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Acquired Knight-Ridder in 2006.

The McClatchy Company publishes 32 daily newspapers in 30 U.S. markets, as well as about 50 nondaily papers. It also owns the Real Cities network of local news sites, and is an investor in CareerBuilder and Classified Ventures, a newspaper industry partnership that runs cars.com and apartments.com. In 2006 the company acquired Knight-Ridder, keeping 20 of that company’s 32 dailies (and divesting the others), gaining an international presence, and significantly beefing up its Washington, D.C., news bureau.
