MetLife traces its roots back to the 1863 founding of the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company, which insured Civil War sailors and soldiers against disabilities. Today MetLife offers life insurance, annuities, automobile and homeowner’s insurance and retail banking services to individuals, as well as group insurance, reinsurance and retirement and savings products and services to corporations and other institutions. It is the largest life insurer in terms of the total dollar value of life insurance policies it has issued in North America, and it offers financial products and services to 88 of the Fortune 100 companies.
