Key markets include health care, education, professional services, retail, and hospitality. Founder Terry Matthews still owns 64 percent of the company.

Company Overview

Mitel Networks specializes in helping businesses migrate from legacy networked phone systems to Internet Protocol equipment that integrates voice, data, and video communications. The company sells business communication platforms, business telephones, messaging solutions, wireless solutions, conferencing and collaboration tools, security monitoring solutions, teleworking solutions, and customer service center solutions. Incorporated in Canada in 1971, Mitel started trading publicly on the New York Stock Exchange in 1981. In 2001, Mitel split into two entities, selling its Business Communication Systems operation and name to co-founder Terry Matthews; the remaining semiconductor division has survived as Zarlink. Matthews is the chairman and majority owner of Mitel Networks. In May 2006 the company filed to go public, and announced that it will use proceeds from the sale for R&D programs and to expand its support capabilities, hoping to land large enterprise clients in the process.
