Parametric Technology began life in 1985 as a developer, manufacturer, and distributor of computer-aided drafting and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software. The company’s Pro/Engineer program, first shipped in 1988, is the world’s most popular three-dimensional design system. Now, with the market for its traditional product offerings stagnant (some two-thirds of PTC's revenue now comes from its service offerings), the company has widened its core business focus to move into the booming market for Web-based collaborative technology. Parametric's Windchill brand of product lifecycle management (PLM) software allows users to collaborate on the Internet through every stage of a product’s lifecycle, from designing the product to marketing it to getting it into the hands of a customer and then supporting that customer’s use of it. PTC’s partners include Accenture, IBM and HP.
