Company Overview
Highlights
A subsidiary of Petters Group Worldwide.
Introduced its first instant camera in 1947.
Although long a household name, the Polaroid story continues to develop. With new technologies lessening the demand for instant photos, Polaroid also offers digital cameras, specialty photo gear, professional imaging equipment, security ID card systems, and plasma TVs, among other home entertainment devices. Polaroid's sales haven't been a pretty picture for the past decade, and the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October 2001. After this setback, however, a turnaround seems to be in the works. It’s currently the largest seller of portable DVD players, and the fourth largest seller of plasma TVs through supermarkets such as Wal-Mart and specialty stores such as Best Buy. In April 2005, the company was wholly acquired by Petters Group Worldwide.
