Maurice Robinson launched the Western Pennsylvania Scholastic newspaper in 1920, with the aim of reaching high school students. Two years later, the Scholastic became national. In 1969, the company went public and entered the recording and filmstrip industries. It has since expanded into educational software, television programming, books, and new media. Today it operates four main divisions: Children’s Book Publishing and Distribution; Educational Publishing; Media, Licensing, and Advertising; and International.
