Unum Group, formerly called UnumProvident, is a leading disability and risk insurance company in the US and the UK (where it operates as Unum Limited). The Chattanooga, Tennessee-based company also offers long-term care, life, travel, accident, and supplemental health insurance. Founded in 1848, Unum converted from a mutual company to a stock company in 1984. In 1999, Unum merged with Provident, the leading provider of disability insurance for individual and corporate clients. Today, it serves more than 21 million policyholders, making benefits payments of $6 billion per year.
