Highlights
Founded in 1995 and went public in 1998.
Owns and operates the de facto industry-standard Domain Name Registry service; it is the authoritative registry for .com, .net, .cc, and .tv addresses. Processes more than 18 billion Internet transactions and 100 million phone calls per day.
Manages two of the world’s 13 Internet root servers.
Operates the biggest independently-owned SS7 network in the world.
VeriSign enables and protects interactions on the world’s voice and data networks. Among its offerings are security services (e.g. SSL certificates, ID authentication services, and online payment processing), communications services (e.g. database, digital content, and billing services), and information services (e.g. real-time publishing, supply chain and naming services). VeriSign Naming Services is the world’s number one domain name registry, managing over 50 million digital identities.
In 2007, VeriSign restructured its operations to create a global sales and services team, as well as an integrated marketing and product development team. The company’s main segments (Internet Services and Communications Services) remained in tact during the reorganization, but VeriSign announced later that year a plan to sell off its Communications Services Group businesses. Also in ’07, VeriSign’s negotiations with ICANN resulted in an increase in fees paid by domain name registrars.
