How do I network without making my boss think that I’m trying to leave?
Keep doing your job. Keep making your boss look good. Network during lunch or before and after work only. Then, when you’re sure you have a great track record with the boss, help them help you in your networking. Ask them for advice, referrals, and introductions—because you want to get to know the company and work on your professional development. You engender their buy-in, get their expertise, and indirectly get their permission to network away.
You can also benefit by networking outside of the company at industry-specific conferences and events. The best of the best attend, so making friends can only broaden your perspective.
