Layoffs are taking place in my company. Should I focus on keeping my job or looking elsewhere?
You always want to continue doing good work, because you preserve your reputation should you stay or go. Remember, you might very well need a good reference should it come time to move on. Whether you focus on going the extra mile to avoid a layoff or getting a jumpstart in the job market depends on several factors:
• Do you want your current job or are you more excited about a clean break?
• What are the company’s prospects, even if you want to stay?
• What are your job prospects in the short-term, even if you want to go?
Take stock of what you want, opportunities both in the company and out on the market, and your resources (e.g., readiness for a search, skill set to take on more where you currently are). Then, make a decision that is appealing and feasible for you.
