What is the best way to ensure I don’t get laid off in this tough economy?
Make yourself indispensable to people who are in a position to protect your job. The people who benefit from your work are your stakeholders. If these people are also decision-makers, continue to go the extra mile for them. Collect testimonials from them so that you have a proven track record. Document your results: What exactly did you do for them and the company? If your stakeholders are leaving the company or are powerless to decide your fate, then you need to get yourself known by the decision-makers. Take on projects that will enable you to be noticed and build relationships with key people.
With that said, always have an updated resume on hand. This way, you keep tabs on your accomplishments, and you’re already well prepared to pounce should a position unexpectedly present itself.
