Question of the Week

Working Overseas Would you consider relocating to a different country for work?

Negotiating a Higher Education

I am looking for a new job and one of my key decision-drivers is whether a company will pay for my tuition benefits (I want to pursue a master’s degree on a part-time basis.).  At what stage during a job negotiation should this be discussed?

Answer

Ask people who used to work at the company or who are currently there, but not connected to the search to get insider information without influencing your search process.  Find these people via your social network, school alumni, and even online message boards (but take responses from strangers with a grain of salt).

Wait until you’re sure that your target employer is sold on you before you ask about tuition reimbursement or any other benefits.  This way, you keep the focus on your skills and interests for as long as possible.

Finally, when you do get the offer, if the tuition issue is a deal-breaker, confirm the most current policy with your HR contact before accepting, just in case your intelligence was out of date or incorrect.
