Looking for Your Dream Job? Go to the Ground Floor

Okay, so no ones dream job is being the intern or assistant to the assistant but it’s a start and one that is necessary with good reason.

As college students and maybe even as far back as high school, we have this idea of where we see ourselves after college.  Forget about where we’re going to end up in our 30’s or 40’s, most of the time young college students can’t see past graduation. 

Don’t let this happen to you.

While encouraged by parents and teachers to dream big and have high aspirations, it’s good to also have a clear sense of reality when it comes to where you’ll stand in the job market come graduation. DO NOT be discouraged if you fall on the lower side of the employee chain. Those who came before you will gladly tell you, this is how it’s suppose to happen.

Here’s why the ground floor is a great place to start your career.

Grunt work builds character—and your resume

Forget the minor stuff like picking up coffee and dry cleaning; it’s the administrative aspect that will come to benefit you in the long run.  Scheduling travel, answering phones, filing papers, and organizing itineraries are all great things to have under your belt as a newbie to the workforce.  And any future employer appreciates someone who knows how to manage the basics.

Gain inside intelligence

If you think you’re working at the next Google and absolutely love the company you’re at, staying there and working your way up the corporate ladder will prove easier than job hopping.  The longer you’re there, the more inside information you’ll come to know, like the right people to please, and of course the scoop on upcoming job opportunities before it becomes public knowledge.  Keep in mind, companies like hiring from within.

You’ll learn more

Imagine your dream job is becoming the next George Lucas or Steven Spielberg. If you want to know how to direct a movie, you’ll need to know everything about how a movie gets made. Landing a job or internship as a production assistant allows you to be an observer of those around you and learn what you can about the process. When the time comes to move up, you’ll be much more knowledgeable for the position and more valuable to the company.

You'll get hungry

If you’re handed everything without earning it, you’ll never know what it’s like to really want something. Starting out on the ground floor always makes us strive for something better. A lot of hard work and hunger are key ingredients to a successful career. Starting at the bottom, you’re bound to inherit those traits.
